Building and Supporting Collaborative and Survivor-Centered Legal Services

"A survivor's safety and empowerment are linked to support from inter-disciplinary collaborations done well. In this session, non-legal and legal professionals working in legal aid organizations will gain skills in structuring and delivering collaborative legal services to survivors. As a result of participating in this session, participants will be better able to: Describe the roles of legal and non-legal professionals in the provision of legal services and address dynamics arising in these relationships. Identify the respective ethical and professional obligations of these professions. Develop structures and strategies for collaborative, survivor-centered provision of legal services to survivors of gender-based violence. "

Robin Turner, JD

American Bar Association Commission on Domestic & Sexual Violence

Robin Turner, Esq. is Senior Attorney at the American Bar Association Commission on Domestic & Sexual Violence where she supports the work of attorneys representing victims of gender-based violence nationwide through the development of legal publications and training curricula; provision of substantive technical assistance; delivery of interactive national training institutes; and analysis of policy solutions to the fundamental inequities in civil court systems. Robin has focused most of her career on the representation of survivors of gender-based violence in civil litigation (family law, orders of protection, victim rights, educational advocacy, employment law, name and gender marker change). As the former Public Policy and Legal Director for the Montana Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence (MCADSV), Robin built, oversaw, and practiced for the Coalition’s LAV-funded sexual assault legal services project. As the MCADSV policy director, Robin represented the organization’s statewide policy work in the interest of ending gender-based violence and fighting oppressive state action against underrepresented communities. She has also previously served survivors as a tribal court staff attorney with the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes and at a private law firm focused on serving survivors of gender-based violence. Robin has lectured at the Alexander Blewett III School of Law at the University of Montana on topics related to serving survivors of gender-based violence. She has developed curriculum and facilitated trainings to hundreds of advocates, attorneys, judges, and court personnel on survivor-centered topics, including ethical obligations of attorneys, trauma-informed lawyering and supervision, confidentiality/privilege/privacy, safety planning, expert witness development, lethality, and victim rights. Robin received her undergraduate degree at Gonzaga University and earned her law degree from the Alexander Blewett III School of Law at the University of Montana. Robin is licensed to practice in Montana state and U.S. district courts, Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribal Court, and the Blackfeet Nation Court.
